The USCGC Polar Star is the one heavy icebreaker the United States owns — and on its fiftieth birthday, this US Coast Guard icebreaker diverted from Operation Deep Freeze to rescue a cruise ship trapped in Antarctica. The Scenic Eclipse II, a 551-foot luxurious expedition yacht, was caught in Antarctic pack ice in the Ross Sea after the ice defeated the very best ice ranking a passenger vessel can carry.
This video breaks down how icebreakers work — from the CODLOG propulsion system that disconnects the engines from the propellers, to the controllable-pitch propellers that make back-and-ram icebreaking attainable, to the micro-alloyed metal hull constructed to survive 1000’s of impacts at polar temperatures. You will see the rescue from the aloft conning station 100 toes above the waterline the place the ice pilot reads the pack, to the engine rooms working at over 100 levels beneath decks. This is the total story of how a Coast Guard crew of 155 broke via eight miles of pack and freed the Scenic Eclipse II, escorted it to open water, after which turned south to end the job that retains American science alive in Antarctica at McMurdo Station.
